This is a tough call, because it depends on what your responsibilities at your financial institution are and what you do for a living. And, if you’re like most people, you don’t have excess time and money to attend many conferences. A conference is a larger investment than going to local un-conference –type events so think of a conference as going to numerous local events that are compressed into a three day period.

For the past few months I have told anybody I work with in bank marketing that they need to go to ABA Marketing Conference this year. The event is being held September 13-15 in San Antonio, TX. Airfare is reasonable and it’s a great city with lots to do during the evening so it’s a great opportunity to network and hear the latest bank marketing topics.

All the sessions are great and feature some of the most well-known folks in bank marketing. Like any conference though, the best interaction is during the breaks and dinners…with such a great line-up of folks on hand it’s hard not to get something out of it.

The only downside? Deciding between some really great sessions that end up being scheduled opposite of each other.

Steve Forbes, as his father before him, subtitles his article in the Forbes Magazine each issue with the following quote, “With all thy getting, get understanding.” What does that mean? I believe it means simply this…don’t be a mile wide and an inch deep. Marketing professionals need to have a depth of understanding enough about all things marketing & sales, that it includes first hand experience. And how do you get that?

For many, the first step is in attending the annual ABA Marketing Conference. This year it is in San Antonio (that doesn’t suck.) This annual event brings together bankers who each speak to direct, specific experiences they have had in marketing financial services. Outside of a couple notable Keynote speakers, the stars of the ABA Marketing Conference are your peers – who are sharing their real life experiences.

What part of what they know, don’t you want? What are you missing out on? Gain the knowledge easily transferred by your peers, who truly understand the difficult job you have in today’s environment. Interact personally with these folks to gain invaluable peer relationships. Share your knowledge. Take what you learn in San Antonio and do something real. Get results. Prove your value. In the end, “with all thy getting, get understanding.” There is no better place to start than at the ABA Marketing Conference.

See you in San Antonio
